A Diamond rotary instrument for cutting and reducing hard tooth structure and ceramics.
Diamond grit abrades rather than cuts, which is what makes it the tool for enamel, porcelain and zirconia. Grit size decides the trade between removal rate and surface finish, and colour-coded bands exist so the assistant can hand you the right one without reading the shank.

- Shank must match the handpiece: FG friction-grip for the high-speed, RA latch for the slow-speed contra-angle, HP 2.35 mm for the laboratory bench handpiece. HP is a bench shank and is not used intraorally.
- Coarse grit removes fast and leaves a rough surface; fine grit refines. Work down the sequence.
- Use copious water spray. A dry Diamond glazes, stops cutting, and generates pulpal heat.
- Discard diamonds that have lost grit — a bald Diamond burnishes instead of cutting.
