Bringing Titanium and Premilled Abutments In-House

Ask a lab owner which work they outsource and the answer is almost always the same: the implant cases. Custom abutments, bars, screw-retained frameworks. Which is to say, they outsource the highest-margin work in the building.

Why implant work stays outsourced

Not because the design is hard — the CAD side is well solved. It stays out because the machining demands are different. Titanium requires wet cooling and rigidity. Screw channels and angled abutment geometry require real axis range, not a nominal 5-axis label. And a mixed implant queue burns through tooling fast enough that a small magazine forces constant operator attention.

Rigidity and cooling. Cast-iron body with a 2.5 kW water-cooled spindle, running a full water-cooling system with coolant tank. Built for full-time laboratory production rather than intermittent chairside use.

Axis range. The B axis swings ±30 degrees and the A axis rotates a full 360 degrees — the motion actually required by undercuts, screw channels and angled abutment geometry.

Tooling. A 24-position automatic bur changer, the largest tool magazine among sub-$40,000 5-axis machines, with real-time tool-life and tool-damage monitoring during the cut. A mixed queue of glass ceramic, wax, PMMA, titanium and premilled abutments runs without a technician stopping to swap tooling.

Automatic calibration compensates numerical drift between jobs rather than waiting for a service visit, and remote assistance is supported.

The limitation

Disc change is manual — there is no automatic disc changer. For implant work that is largely academic, since abutment and bar cases are individually fixtured anyway. But if you were hoping to also run overnight zirconia disc production on the same machine, that is not what this is.

Take what you paid an outside milling center for custom abutments and bars over the last 12 months. That figure, not the spec sheet, tells you whether this machine belongs in your lab. For most labs doing steady implant volume, the answer arrives faster than they expect.
