Most clear aligners are still thermoformed: a sheet is heated and pulled over a printed model. LuxCreo prints the aligner itself. Two of the differences below have no thermoform workaround at all.
Thickness is programmed and varied by zone, so force is delivered where the movement needs it. A thermoformer cannot do this. A heated sheet thins wherever it stretches, and that thinning is a consequence of the process, not a setting anyone can dial in.
The aligner is printed directly, so there is no model to print, trim, store or discard at any stage. Thermoforming needs one physical model per stage by definition. Removing the model removes the labor, the consumables and the printer time attached to it.
