Need the sintering schedule before you switch brands?

Zirconia is not interchangeable at the furnace. Ask us for the published ramp, dwell and cool-down for the exact series you are considering, and we will send it before you order.

GC America Zirconia Discs Pros and Trade-offs

Honest trade-offs. Every zirconia brand is a compromise between translucency, strength, price and catalog depth — here is where GC America sits.

Pros

  • Shade and translucency logic matches GC Initial layering ceramics — one shade language across the whole case
  • ML ELITE multilayer is the most tightly controlled gradient of the premium brands USDD carries
  • Japanese manufacture with full technical documentation and a published sintering program
  • Four translucency grades let you match the disc to the indication instead of the other way round

Trade-offs

  • The most expensive discs on this page, up to $309 per blank
  • Thickness ladder tops out at 25 mm and is less granular than Aconia or VITA
  • ST, HT and UHT are narrow lines — the depth sits in ML ELITE

Which GC America Zirconia Disc Is Best for Your Lab? USDD Buyer Profiles

Six buyer profiles and the disc decision each one usually lands on.

High-volume crown-and-bridge lab

You mill the same posterior units all day and margin per unit decides the month.

Aconia ST-PRE and GUSROM 3D PREMIUM are the lowest cost per disc in the lineup with full shade coverage.

Aesthetic anterior lab

Anterior singles and veneers where the shade has to match a natural neighbour.

VITA Dental Direkt DD cubeX2 ML and GC Initial ZR ML ELITE — the two most controlled multilayer gradients USDD carries.

Implant and full-arch lab

Long-span frameworks, bars and full-arch hybrids that need thickness and strength.

Look at 22–25 mm blanks: Aconia, DIGITECH and MIIYEN all publish 25 mm; Aconia goes to 30 mm.

Practice with a chairside mill

Small in-office mill, a handful of same-day crowns a week, no lab technician on staff.

Buy in small counts of 14–16 mm pre-shaded multilayer. UP3D 4D Multilayer is matched to UP3D mills you may already own.

Lab standardising on one brand

You want one sintering schedule, one shade protocol and one purchase order.

VITA Dental Direkt and Amann Girrbach ZOLID both span monolayer through high-translucency multilayer in one ecosystem.

Lab testing a lower-cost second source

You have a primary brand and want a cheaper disc for low-value units without changing the furnace twice a day.

Test GUSROM or LUMIX against your current sintering profile on a single disc before switching a shade family.

What Makes Zirconia Discs Different — Key Specs Explained by USDD

The six variables that decide whether a blank fits your mill, your furnace and your case.

98.5 mm is the volume standard

Nine of the ten brands USDD stocks are built on the 98.5 mm blank with a standard step. Thickness is the variable that changes, not diameter — so a disc that fits one open-system mill usually fits the next.

Thickness drives what you can nest

12–14 mm covers single crowns and thin veneers. 16–18 mm is the workhorse for bridges and multi-unit anteriors. 20–25 mm is what you need for full-arch, implant bars and long-span frameworks.

Multilayer vs monolayer

Multilayer (4D / ML / gradient) discs carry shade and translucency transitions already inside the blank, so an anterior crown comes out of the mill closer to final. Monolayer pre-shaded discs cost less and stain up predictably.

Translucency is a strength trade

Higher yttria content buys translucency and costs flexural strength. High-translucency 4Y/5Y layers suit anteriors; 3Y-TZP high-strength layers belong under posterior and long-span work.

Pre-shaded beats dipping

Pre-shaded blanks remove the colouring-liquid step, the drying wait and the shade drift that comes with it. Every brand in this lineup is available pre-shaded across the VITA classical range.

Sintering schedule is brand-specific

Zirconia is not interchangeable at the furnace. Each brand publishes its own ramp, dwell and cool-down. Running brand A's schedule on brand B's disc is the fastest route to a cracked case.
