5-MINUTE BUSINESS SYNOPSIS 2 · Part 5 of 10
Sandblasting is the step that either cleans a casting or erodes the margin you spent an hour waxing. Abrasive size is the setting most labs never write down.
What this abrasive is
GARRECO white aluminum oxide, 100 micron, in a 2.26 kg (5 lb) pack. The manufacturer describes the white grade as 99.6% pure electro-fused aluminum oxide, machine-sized and computer-scanned for uniform particle size, packed with desiccant to prevent moisture absorption. Its stated indication is divesting and cleaning of appliances. The page notes it can replace 110 micron.
Why uniform size matters
A bag with mixed particle sizes blasts unevenly: the big pieces cut, the dust clogs the nozzle. Uniform sizing is the point of buying a graded abrasive. Moisture is the other enemy, so keep the pack sealed, with the desiccant in, between uses.
The cost and the limit
At $35.54 for 5 lb, abrasive costs $7.11 per pound. That is the cheap part of a casting. The limit: 100 micron is a general divesting and cleaning size, and it is not a setting for fine surface work or for thin margins. Write the grit size and pressure used on the job ticket so the next case gets the same treatment.
