5-MINUTE BUSINESS SYNOPSIS 2 · Part 3 of 10
A wax pattern does not fail on the day you carve it. It fails when the casting comes back with an open margin and nobody can say why. Wax temperature is one of the few variables you fully control.
The numbers RENFERT publishes
Geo Crowax grey-opaque is a medium-hard universal modeling wax. RENFERT lists a working temperature range of 66 to 76 °C (151 to 169 °F) and a recommended temperature setting of 115 to 135 °C (239 to 275 °F). It is suitable for modeling with a flame burner and with an electric wax knife, and the manufacturer lists low shrinkage as the reason for its precision.
What that means at the bench
Pick one setting inside the recommended range and put it on a sticky note on the wax heater. When two technicians run the same wax at different temperatures, you get two different patterns from the same product. Grey opaque also shows carving detail and thin spots better than transparent waxes for many technicians.
The limitation
Medium-hard wax is a universal choice, not a specialist one. If your cases need a very soft or very hard feel, the Geo line has other formulations. At $15.72 for 80 g, testing a tin on three cases costs you less than one remake.
