One Machine for Every Material: The Case for a Dry-and-Wet Bench Mill

The two-machine lab is common and rarely intentional. You buy a dry mill for zirconia, then a wet mill when a doctor starts asking for glass ceramic. Now you own 2 machines, 2 service schedules, 2 sets of consumables — and each sits idle roughly half the time.

What consolidation actually requires

A machine cannot credibly claim both jobs unless it solves 3 things: a spindle that survives metal, a tooling system that does not force a manual changeover between wet and dry, and enough axis range to justify a single fixture.

The DEPRAG W5 addresses each. It is a 5-axis dry-and-wet unit with a 2.5 kW, Ø62 mm water-cooled spindle at 60,000 rpm rated from soft materials through metal. The tool magazine is a dual dry/wet 18x2 configuration — it processes every material without changing the needle, which is the step that normally makes combined machines annoying to own.

Motion range

  • 5-axis linkage, A axis 360 degrees, B axis +30 to -90 degrees
  • 90-degree vertical machining capability
  • 1:1 replica design that restores natural tooth texture without secondary grinding
  • INOVANCE servo motors, 3-minute automatic calibration
  • Automatic tool change with tool-life monitoring

Fixturing

Holders for 1 disc, 3 pre-milled blanks and 6 blocks, with a C-CLAMP and pre-mill abutment holder. That combination is the point: disc work, block work and abutment work on the same platform rather than 3 different setups.

Body is integrated cast aluminium with a transparent glass processing door. Water tank is 10 L. CAM support includes Millbox, Hyperdent and WorkNC, so you are not locked into a proprietary design chain.

The trade-off, stated plainly

A combined machine cannot run 2 jobs simultaneously. If your volume genuinely saturates a single spindle across an 8-hour day, 2 specialized machines will out-produce 1 combined one. Below that threshold — which is where most labs actually operate — consolidation wins on capital, floor space and maintenance load, and it fits on a bench you already have.
