Step 4

exocad bundles: Core vs Advanced vs Implant vs Ultimate, module by module

Every module in every bundle, and what each one actually does. “Add-on” means it is available but priced separately.

Before you buy the software

exocad hardware requirements: will your computer actually run it?

Straight from exocad’s own documentation. Check this before you spend a dollar on a license — an underpowered workstation is the most common reason a new exocad user is unhappy in week one.

Minimum

Runs, but not comfortably

  • CPU Quad-core, 2.8 GHz
  • RAM 8 GB
  • Graphics 4 GB VRAM, CUDA 3.0 or OpenCL 1.2 minimum
  • Screen 1080p (1920×1080) at 100% DPI

exocad states that older or entry-level Nvidia and AMD chips may perform poorly, and Intel integrated graphics are not supported for PartialCAD.

Cost-effective — recommended

The sensible buy for most labs

  • CPU Intel i5-10400 or AMD Ryzen 5 3600
  • RAM 16 GB
  • Graphics Nvidia RTX 2060 or AMD Radeon RX 5600 XT
  • Screen 1080p at 100% DPI — higher DPI needs higher resolution

exocad’s own recommended configuration to run any exocad product.

Full workstation

Everything at once, full-arch, heavy data

  • CPU Intel Core i9-14900K or AMD Ryzen 9 9950X
  • RAM 32 GB DDR5 non-ECC
  • Graphics Nvidia RTX 4080 (16 GB) or RTX 5070, AMD RX 7700 XT or 7900 XT (20 GB)
  • Screen WQHD (2560×1440), UHD (3840×2160) recommended

For running several exocad products simultaneously.

Three hard stops. Check these before anything else.
  • exocad is Windows only. Virtual machines, including Parallels, are not supported. On an Intel Mac you can run Windows via Boot Camp at your own risk — exocad support does not cover it. Apple Silicon Macs (M-series) cannot run exocad at all, because Boot Camp is not available on them.
  • x64 Intel or AMD only. ARM and RISC architectures, and x64 emulation such as Qualcomm Snapdragon or Apple M-series, are not supported.
  • Windows 11 (24H2 or 25H2). Windows 10 (22H2) is supported only under Microsoft’s Extended Security Updates programme. All Home and Pro editions of Windows 10 are past Microsoft support — exocad strongly recommends upgrading to Windows 11.

Also required

  • A free USB slot for the license dongle
  • An internet connection — mandatory
  • Standard keyboard and mouse
  • exocad framework 2025 installed
  • Adobe PDF Reader, to open generated PDFs

Optional, supported

  • Multitouch screen
  • 3D mouse — 3Dconnexion SpaceMouse
  • 3D mouse — SpaceControl
  • LED or display-powered 3D-mouse macros and buttons are not supported

Already own exocad — and it lapsed

Expired exocad license? Three routes back, and the cheapest is not the obvious one

If your perpetual license has no active upgrade contract you are not stuck, and you almost certainly should not buy a new license. Here is the honest comparison, including the option that costs us the most to tell you about.

Route 1

Refresh Program

Best when you are staying at roughly the same capability.

  • One-time Refresh Fee plus the annual upgrade contract
  • Works on a license of any age — nine years old is fine
  • Every module you already own is upgraded with it
  • You receive two software versions — the current release and the next major one
  • The fee is flat, regardless of age or module count

Because the fee is flat, it is worth most on a heavily loaded license and least on a bare Core.

Route 2 — usually cheapest

Trade up to Flex

Best when you want more capability than you had.

  • Trade the old perpetual dongle for a new Flex dongle
  • exocad states you save the initial purchase fee
  • Available specifically because you have no active upgrade contract
  • Upgrades always included from then on
  • Lost or stolen dongle covered — perpetual never was

This converts a dead dongle into a live, current license at a fraction of a new purchase.

Route 3

Buy a new license

Rarely the right answer if you already own a dongle.

  • Full price, as if you had never been an exocad customer
  • Your existing dongle and modules contribute nothing
  • Includes one year of upgrades

Only sensible when Routes 1 and 2 have both been checked and ruled out. Ask us to check them.

The mistake we see most often, stated plainly.

People assume that refreshing a small license is money wasted because they cannot grow afterwards. That is not true. Activating add-on modules requires an active upgrade contract — which is exactly what a lapsed license lost and what Refresh restores. A refreshed Core can take modules afterwards.

The real trap is the opposite one: refreshing and then buying modules one by one. Bought individually, three implant modules cost close to what the Implant Bundle costs outright, so you pay bundle money without bundle pricing. If you are moving up a tier, compare Route 2 before you spend anything.

Which route is yours? Two questions decide it.

  1. Do you want the same capability you had, or more? Same → Refresh is normally cheapest. More → check the Flex trade-up first.
  2. How long ago did it expire? Under 90 days and you may not need Refresh at all — exocad’s grace period lets you pay a single annual fee and extend the contract one year from the last end date. Past day 90 that door closes.

Send us the dongle number and the modules on it. We come back with all three routes priced side by side, in writing, and we will tell you if the cheapest one is the one that pays us least.

Price my three routesCall 954-874-6325

Refresh Program terms, the 90-day grace period and the perpetual-to-Flex trade-up are exocad’s published policies. Fees vary by license and are confirmed in writing before you commit.

100% transparency

Before you buy exocad: the 12 things to be careful about

We sell exocad. That is exactly why this section exists. Every limitation, expiry and exclusion that causes buyer’s remorse six months after the invoice is paid — find out here rather than after the dongle ships.

01“Perpetual” does not mean it runs forever on any computer

The licence never expires and you keep that version indefinitely — that part is real. But exocad states plainly that technical progress in hardware and software can mean legacy licences stop being compatible with new operating systems or computers. The licence is permanent. The compatibility is not.

02A frozen version slowly stops recognising your own lab

Without an active upgrade contract you never receive another version. The cost is not missing features — it is that new implant libraries, new materials, new scanner and 3D-printer integrations all arrive in new releases. The printer you buy in 2029 may have no preset in a 2026 build.

03When the upgrade contract lapses you lose far more than upgrades

On a Perpetual licence these are included only for the first year after activation unless the contract stays active: dentalshare, the library download portal, the ability to activate any add-on module, free replacement of a defective dongle, AI services, and reseller support — including ours.

04A lost or stolen dongle is not covered on Perpetual. It is covered on Flex.

Your licence lives on a physical USB dongle. Perpetual with an active contract replaces a defective dongle free — lost or stolen is not covered, at any point. Flex replaces lost, stolen and defective dongles free. This single difference has cost labs more money than any feature comparison on this page.

05exoplan and ChairsideCAD stop working if you stop paying

This is regulation, not a sales tactic. Both are Medical Device Software under EU Regulation 2017/745, which requires a defined lifetime and continuous maintenance. There is no perpetual licence for either product — it does not exist and cannot be bought, and the software ceases to function if the subscription is not renewed. Budget it as a permanent fixed cost, like lab rent.

06The Ultimate Bundle does not include everything

The name is misleading, so here it is: xSNAP, InCAD Nesting and Nesting are paid add-ons at every tier — including Ultimate. If nesting is part of your production flow, Ultimate does not cover it.

07The Advanced Bundle contains no Implant Module

This is the most common mis-buy in exocad. “Advanced” adds esthetics and workflow — Virtual Articulator, Provisional, TruSmile, ZRS. Custom abutments, screw-retained designs and bars start at the Implant Bundle. If you design any implant work at all, do not buy Advanced.

08Model Creator and Bite Splint are not in the Implant Bundle either

A lab that mills implant bars and prints models needs more than Implant. Two honest routes: add the modules to an Implant Bundle, or go Ultimate. We will price both and tell you which is cheaper for your actual case mix — including when Ultimate is the wrong answer.

09“AI included” is not “AI unlimited”

AI Design, TruSmile Photo and TruSmile Video run on exocad Credits. A number of credits is included depending on your contract; beyond that, more must be purchased, and regional availability varies. On a Perpetual licence with no upgrade contract, AI is included for the first year only.

10exocad designs. It does not mill or print.

The openness is the main reason to choose it — most scanners, printers and mills, open material libraries, and no click fees and no per-case charges. But CAD is not CAM. To produce, you still need CAM software and your machine’s post-processor. That is a separate purchase. Anyone selling exocad as end-to-end without saying so is counting on you not asking.

11Standalone modules: one dongle at a time

If you only need one function you can skip the full CAD licence — several modules run standalone on a low-cost DentalDB licence, and multiple standalone modules share one DentalDB. Two limits: standalone is Flex only, and a DentalCAD dongle and a DentalDB dongle cannot run at the same time on the same PC.

12The software is not the whole cost

Plan for a workstation that can carry full-arch data, CAM software and post-processors, training and ramp time (weeks to fast, not days), your renewal from year 2, and credits if AI is part of the plan.

Already own exocad?

Lapsed license? Three routes back — one of them is on a clock

Expired under 90 days

Call immediately. exocad’s grace period lets you pay a single annual fee, and the contract extends one year from the last end date. Past day 90 this door closes.

Expired long ago — any age

The Refresh Program applies. A one-time refresh fee plus the annual upgrade contract brings the license fully current including every module you already own, and delivers two software versions. The fee is fixed regardless of license age or module count.

Trade up to Flex

With no active upgrade contract you can trade your old Perpetual dongle for a new Flex dongle and save the initial purchase fee.

Do not buy a new license until we have checked which of these applies to you. It is usually the cheapest call you will make this quarter — 954-874-6325.

Answers

exocad licensing questions, answered straight

Do I own exocad or rent it?

Both are available for DentalCAD. A Perpetual licence you own permanently. A Flex licence is a subscription you keep using as long as you pay. For exoplan and ChairsideCAD, subscription is the only option — ownership does not exist for those products.

What happens if I stop paying?

Perpetual: the software keeps running, frozen at your version, and you lose dentalshare, library downloads, module activation, dongle coverage and support. Flex or monthly: the software stops. exoplan and ChairsideCAD: the software stops.

Is there a renewal fee every year?

On Perpetual the upgrade contract is optional and annual — cancel any time, free, no exit fee, you simply stop receiving upgrades. On Flex the fee is mandatory to keep running.

How do I pay — one time or monthly?

Three schedules. Perpetual: one payment, then an optional annual upgrade contract. Flex annual: an initial fee for year 1, then a yearly fee. Monthly: a small initial fee covering setup plus the first month, then a monthly fee from month 2.

Which is cheaper long term?

It depends entirely on the bundle. On the larger bundles Perpetual overtakes subscription around year 6 or 7. On the Core Version, Perpetual does not pay back for more than a decade. Ask us to run your exact numbers before you decide.

Are there per-case or click fees?

No. exocad has no click fees and no per-case charges. Unlimited cases on any licence.

Can I add modules later?

On Flex, any time. On Perpetual, only while your upgrade contract is active — a lapsed licence cannot have modules added until it is brought current.

Can I turn modules off to save money?

On Flex, yes — deactivate a module and stop paying for it. On Perpetual, no.

Can I switch from Perpetual to Flex?

Yes. With no active upgrade contract you can trade the old Perpetual dongle for a new Flex dongle and save the initial purchase fee.

My licence lapsed years ago. Am I stuck?

No. Within 90 days of expiry you pay a single annual fee and the contract extends one year from the last end date. Beyond that the Refresh Program applies — a one-time refresh fee plus the annual contract brings any licence current, however old, including every module you already own, and delivers two software versions. Call before you buy anything new.

Will it work with my scanner, printer or mill?

Almost certainly — exocad supports 35+ scanners, 40+ 3D printers, 360+ materials and 19 virtual articulators. But your version matters: new device integrations arrive in new releases, so a frozen licence may not support hardware you buy later.

How long until my team is productive?

Wizard mode gets a new user designing quickly. Budget several weeks to full speed for a technician new to CAD. Ask about training — we would rather you buy it than struggle.
