The Suction Loss You Will Not Notice Until It Costs You

Dust extraction is treated as furniture. It gets installed, switched on, and then ignored until something obviously fails. The failure mode is not obvious, which is exactly the problem.

Why the decline is invisible

A filter does not stop working on a particular day. It loads progressively with fine particulate, and airflow falls as it loads. The unit still runs, still makes the same noise, and still pulls visible debris.

Nobody notices at 80% of rated airflow. At 60% the technician starts finding dust on surfaces that used to stay clean, and usually blames the machine or the operator. At 50% the extraction is no longer capturing respirable particulate at the source, which is the entire reason it exists.

What it costs before it costs health

Zirconia dust is abrasive. Dust that is not captured settles on bench surfaces, on model work, and inside the milling chamber. It contaminates polishing steps, it gets into spindle tapers, and it shortens the life of anything with a bearing.

There is also a scrap cost that never gets attributed: dust settling on a wax up or a wet acrylic surface is a remake nobody traces back to the extraction unit.

Filter and bag are not the same thing

This is where most labs go wrong. The dust bag is visible, fills obviously, and gets changed. The fine filter sits downstream, is not visible, and is what actually holds airflow.

Changing the bag and not the fine filter feels like maintenance and does not restore suction. If you cannot remember the last time the fine filter was changed, that is your answer.

Setting a real interval

Manufacturers publish a figure based on typical duty. Take it as a starting point and then measure — hold a light strip of paper at the capture point on a new filter and note how it behaves, then repeat monthly. When capture has visibly weakened, that is your interval.

Measuring it without instruments

Buy an inexpensive anemometer if you want a real number. If not, the paper test is repeatable enough to be useful: hold a consistent strip of paper at a fixed distance from the capture point and note the angle it holds.

Do it the day a new filter goes in, photograph it, and repeat monthly against the photograph. You are looking for change, not an absolute value, and change is what a saturated filter produces.

Where the dust actually goes

Extraction that is not capturing at source does not make the dust disappear. It becomes airborne, settles across the lab, and lands on every surface including work in progress.

The costs are distributed and therefore invisible. Contaminated wax-ups. Dust in a polishing wheel that then scratches. Particulate in a spindle taper causing the run-out that ruins fine margins. None of those get attributed to the extraction unit.

Filter, bag, and the order they matter

The bag catches bulk debris and fills visibly. The fine filter catches respirable particulate and is what actually determines airflow and air quality. Only one of them is obvious, and it is the less important one.

Set a calendar reminder for the fine filter independent of the bag. If the two are on the same schedule, the filter is being changed too rarely or the bag too often.

Rated airflow is a clean-filter number

Manufacturer airflow figures are measured with clean filtration. A unit rated at approximately 3,980 l/min delivers that when new and less thereafter, continuously.

Size extraction with headroom above the mill's stated requirement rather than exactly at it, so that a partially loaded filter still meets the machine's need rather than falling below it halfway through the replacement interval.
