Extraction is usually specified after the mill is on the bench, when someone realises dry milling produces a lot of dust. Doing it in that order means you size the extraction to what is available rather than to what the machine needs.
Three numbers to get from the mill manufacturer
Required airflow at the machine port, in litres per minute or cubic metres per hour. Port diameter, because adapters cost airflow. And whether the unit expects continuous extraction or triggered extraction synchronised to the spindle.
Those three decide the extraction unit. Ask for them before you sign for the mill, not after.
Why undersizing shows up as tool life
This is the connection most labs miss. In dry milling, extraction is not only a cleanliness measure — it removes chips from the cutting zone. Inadequate airflow leaves chips in the cut, the tool re-cuts its own debris, and the cutting edge wears far faster.
The lab sees short tool life and buys more burs. The actual fault is airflow. Nothing about the symptom points at the extraction unit.
Filtration stage matters as much as airflow
Zirconia dust is fine. An extraction unit with adequate airflow and inadequate filtration moves the particulate from the chamber into the room, which is worse than not extracting it, because now it is airborne and distributed.
Check the filtration stage rating, not only the motor rating. And confirm the fine filter is a stocked replacement item rather than a proprietary part with a long lead time.
Noise and placement
Extraction units run whenever the mill runs, which in a lab doing overnight work means all night. Noise rating is a real working condition, not a footnote. So is placement — a unit that has to sit under the bench needs to fit and still be serviceable.
A simple sequence
Get the airflow figure from the mill manufacturer. Add margin for duct length and any adapter. Specify a unit that meets that figure at its rated filtration, not at its unloaded maximum. Then budget filters as a recurring line from day one.

Duct losses, briefly
Airflow at the unit is not airflow at the machine port. Every metre of duct, every bend and every diameter change costs flow.
Keep the run short and straight, match the duct diameter to the port rather than adapting down, and avoid flexible hose where rigid will do — corrugated flexible duct costs substantially more flow per metre than smooth rigid.
A correctly sized unit at the end of a long, kinked flexible run can deliver less at the machine than a smaller unit mounted close.
Continuous or triggered
Some mills switch extraction on with the spindle and off after a delay. Others expect it to run continuously. This matters for unit selection because a motor rated for intermittent duty will not survive continuous overnight running.
If you plan unattended overnight milling, confirm the extraction is rated for continuous duty at that load. This is a common and expensive mismatch.
Filtration class and where the dust ends up
Check what the fine filter is rated to capture, and confirm the exhaust is filtered rather than vented straight back into the room.
A unit that captures well and exhausts poorly relocates the problem from the machine to the technician's breathing zone. For a lab running dry zirconia daily, that is the specification that matters most and it is rarely the one compared.
A short specification checklist
Required airflow at the port, from the mill manufacturer. Port diameter. Continuous or triggered duty. Filtration class. Noise rating at working distance. Replacement filter availability and price. Physical footprint including service access.
Get those seven before you quote, and the extraction stops being an afterthought bolted on after the mill lands.
