The most common reason a lab looks at a zirconia disc and does not order it is not price. It is not being certain it will run on their machine. Here is how to remove that doubt in about 2 minutes.
What closed system actually means
A closed system ties the disc to the machine through a physical mount, a software recognition step, or both. Some platforms only accept blanks with a proprietary holder geometry. Others read a chip or code and refuse unrecognised material.
Closed is not automatically bad — it usually means the manufacturer has validated milling strategies for that exact material. It does mean your material choice is decided by whoever sold you the mill.

What open system means
Open system discs use a standard blank geometry and carry no recognition requirement. Any mill that accepts that blank form and lets you enter your own material parameters can run them.
The trade is that you are responsible for the milling strategy and the sintering curve, because no one has pre validated them for your machine.
Where Zirkonzahn compatible sits
Zirkonzahn uses its own blank geometry, which is why compatibility is called out separately. A disc described as Zirkonzahn compatible is manufactured to that holder form specifically. It is a statement about physical fit, not about software.
How to check in 2 minutes
Measure the outer diameter and the step or shoulder on a disc you already run successfully. 98 mm and 98.5 mm are both common and they are not interchangeable in every holder.
Then confirm your CAM software lets you create a custom material profile. If it does, an open system disc will run. If your software only offers a fixed list, you are effectively closed regardless of what the disc says.
Then order one disc, not ten. Any supplier confident in compatibility will not object.
The three failure modes, and which is which
Disc will not physically mount. That is geometry — wrong diameter, wrong shoulder, wrong holder. Measurable in seconds and unambiguous.
Disc mounts but the software refuses it. That is recognition — the machine expects an identifier it cannot find. No amount of physical fit will resolve it.
Disc mounts, software accepts it, results are poor. That is strategy — the mill is using cutting parameters written for a different material. Fixable by creating a correct material profile, if your software allows it.
Labs routinely diagnose the third as the first and return a perfectly compatible disc.
What a material profile actually contains
Feed rate, spindle speed, stepdown, stepover and tool selection per operation. Those values are what a closed system supplies for you and what an open system expects you to provide.
If you have never created one, start from the profile for the closest material you already run and adjust conservatively. Reduce feed first. Most poor results on a new open-system disc are a feed rate written for softer material.
The commercial reality behind closed systems
Closed systems exist to protect a consumable revenue stream. That is not a criticism — it also funds validated milling strategies and a single point of accountability when something fails, which has genuine value for a lab without in-house CAM expertise.
The cost is that your material price is set by one supplier for the life of the machine. Over 5 years, that is usually a larger number than the difference in purchase price between an open and a closed platform.
Work out your annual disc spend and multiply by 5 before deciding the machine on purchase price alone.
