Zirconia is sold by generation — 3Y, 4Y, 5Y — and the numbers refer to yttria content in mol percent. The practical effect is a straight trade: more yttria gives more translucency and less flexural strength. There is no generation that wins on both.
What the trade actually looks like
3Y sits at the high strength end. It is the material for long span posterior bridges, implant bars and anywhere the connector is carrying real load. It is also the most opaque, which is why 3Y anteriors have a reputation for looking flat.
5Y sits at the other end. Genuinely translucent, suitable for anterior single units and veneers, and not the material for a 4 unit posterior bridge regardless of what the case looks like on screen.
4Y and modern multilayer discs are the compromise most labs actually run, and good multilayer products distribute strength and translucency through the puck rather than stacking them in bands.

Choosing by connector, not by tooth
The useful rule is not anterior versus posterior. It is whether there is a connector and how much cross sectional area it has.
A single crown anywhere in the mouth can take a translucent material. The moment you span an edentulous site, the connector becomes the failure point and the decision moves toward strength. Span length and connector height decide the generation. Position in the arch only decides how much you care about the shade.
Where multilayer changes the answer
A graded multilayer puck lets you place the restoration in the height of the disc so the incisal third sits in the translucent layer and the cervical third sits in the more opaque, stronger layer. Nesting position becomes a clinical decision, not just a material saving one.
That only works if the gradient is continuous. A puck with discrete bands will show a transition line, and no amount of staining removes a step you milled in.

Practical figures to hold on to
A quality multilayer disc will publish a range rather than a single number, because the layers differ. The MIIYEN 3D PRO ML runs 800 to 1,200 MPa across its layers with 43% to 57% light transmittance distributed continuously, in 98.5 mm discs from 10 mm to 30 mm, covering A1 to D4 and BL1 to BL4. It is open system and Zirkonzahn compatible.
Putting numbers on the trade
Published flexural strength for 3Y sits in the region of 1,200 MPa and upward. 5Y typically lands materially lower, often around half that, and translucency moves in the opposite direction.
Those are ranges, not constants, and they vary by manufacturer and by sintering. Which is exactly why a disc that publishes a range across its layers — 800 to 1,200 MPa, for instance — is telling you something more useful than a single headline number.
A single number on a multilayer disc should make you suspicious. The layers are not the same material; they cannot have the same strength.
Connector cross-section, the number that actually decides
Manufacturers publish minimum connector dimensions per material. That figure, not the tooth position, is the real constraint.
A 3-unit anterior bridge with tight embrasures may not permit the connector height a translucent material needs. In that case the aesthetic material is simply not available to you, and the honest answer to the client is a more opaque material or a different design — not a translucent bridge that fails in 18 months.
Check the connector before you choose the disc. Doing it the other way round is how the material gets blamed for a design decision.
Where multilayer genuinely helps
A graded puck lets you place a single unit so the cervical third sits in stronger, more opaque material and the incisal third sits in the translucent layer. You get an aesthetic result from a stronger overall restoration than a uniform 5Y would give.
On a bridge the same logic applies with a caveat: the connector must sit in the layer that can carry it. Nesting a bridge so the connector falls in the translucent zone gives you a beautiful restoration with a designed-in failure point.
A short decision rule
Single unit, no connector: choose for aesthetics. Short span with generous connectors: multilayer, nested deliberately. Long span or minimal connector height: choose strength and manage the shade with surface work.
